How to increase RAM in laptop

You can increase your laptop's RAM in two ways: physically upgrading the RAM or adjusting virtual memory settings.

1. Physically Upgrading RAM

If your laptop has an extra RAM slot or supports higher-capacity RAM sticks, you can upgrade it by:

  • Checking your laptop's RAM compatibility using tools like Crucial's system scanner.
  • Purchasing a compatible RAM stick.
  • Opening your laptop's RAM compartment (usually under the back panel).
  • Removing the old RAM (if necessary) and installing the new RAM by aligning the notches and pressing down firmly.

For a step-by-step guide, check out this wikiHow tutorial or watch this YouTube video for a visual walkthrough.

2. Increasing Virtual Memory (Software-Based)

If upgrading RAM physically isn't an option, you can boost performance by increasing virtual memory:

  • Open System Properties (sysdm.cpl in Run).
  • Go to Advanced system settings > Performance settings > Advanced.
  • Click Change under Virtual Memory.
  • Uncheck Automatically manage paging file size and set a custom size:
    • Initial size = Installed RAM × 1.5
    • Maximum size = Installed RAM × 3.0
  • Click Set, then OK, and restart your laptop.
